I first discovered the runes in 1983. Following a disastrous stint in the military, I was wandering around America trying to find something solid to hold on to. PTSD was a constant companion as I worked odds jobs across America. I was told about a hot spring on the Rio Grande River near the town of Taos, New Mexico. I was relaxing in that wonderfully healing water, alternating hot and cold, when the setting sun struck a gleam on a rock in the gravel bar beside my head. I was reaching over to pick up the rock when I noticed the edge of a book buried under a stone in the gravel bar.

The book was a thin, hard-cover barely larger than a paperback. I retrieved it and the rock that had originally caught my attention and settled back to resume my soak. Later that evening, as I settled in for the night. I opened the book. It’s cover was concave from the weight of the rock that held it down. It was The Book of Runes by Ralph Blum. Intrigued, I read the book. The insights that I gained from simply reading this tiny tome changed my life forever. It placed my feet on paths that eventually led to the Flower of Life and Sacred Geomentry. This is the story of how this life evolved from that life.

The piece of iron pyrites became my first rune. I used its basic shape and size to determine what other stones became my runes. It took me almost 18 months and trips through 5 states before I found all of my stones. But from the beginning, I used runes that I made for myself and I recommend that you do also. The material you choose is unimportant. You can use stone, wood, ceramic, tile or clay; even paper runes are effective manifestation tools. Your attitude and effort is what is important.

It didn’t happen overnight, nor in a year, nor even a decade, but those runes began giving me advice that led me to making better choices with increased insight and clarity. Then, when I realized that all 24 of the Elder Futhark are found on the Flower of Life, I began a shamanic journey into my soul that I want to share with you so that you can experience something like it for yourself.
